I have two printers running a CIS. My 2200 uses Epson original ink and my 1280 uses a CIS with special black-and-white quadtone inks. Both are running 3rd party inks.
Your concern was: "I have always thought, as with refills etc, it will be a low quailty ink and be bland or fade quickly."
The ink quality is not always lower than the original inks, depending on who you purchase them from. As they say, you always gonna get what you pay for, so an ink system from eBay for $25 is not going to give you the same quality as one for $250 from a reputable company.
Some people run 3rd party inks not to save money, but to use better or different inks than the original inks, such as an archival quadtone set. If you want bulk color inks that resist fading, you might try the pigment inks from Lyson, InkRepublic, or Vintax Ink Systems. They all carry top quality formulated inks. Last time I tried a few bottles from Lyson a few years ago I could not get them to profile well so I gave up and bought the 2200. Maybe Lyson may have gotten their act together now.
My current CIS systems on both printers works well, but in my experience, you may want to get one that has at least some sort of warranty past 30 days. I had one that started leaking after 3 months.
